Normative English Grammar

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to strengthen students’ understanding of English grammar, develop the necessary English grammar skills, and promote the use of various grammatical structures in oral and written communication in a variety of discourse situations.

CONTENT

1. Parts of speech and their functions in discourse. Nouns. Classification of nouns, categories of gender and number, genitive forms. Use of articles before nouns.
2. Adjectives. Classification of adjectives and degrees of comparison. Word order of adjectives and their position in relation to other parts of speech.
3. Adverb. Classification of adverbs and degrees of comparison. Position of adverbs in a sentence.
4. Verbs. Classification of verbs. Tense, aspect, voice, mood. Verb tenses and their usage. Passive voice and its usage. Phrasal verbs and their usage.
5. Types of questions (general, specific, multiple-choice, and multiple-answer) and their uses. Direct and indirect questions, and their uses.
6. Modal verbs and their functions. Modal verbs and their equivalents. The use of modal verbs in the present and past tenses.
