As part of the project, a lexicographic resource has been developed and published:
“New Botanical Dictionary: Terms in Latvian–Latin–English–German–Russian.”
The dictionary is intended for a wide range of users with an interdisciplinary focus — primarily researchers, lecturers, translators, and students of natural sciences, linguistics, and translation studies, as well as anyone interested in the meaning, translation, formation, and place of biological terms within modern taxonomy.
The goal of the project is to develop an open-access, interactive, and multifunctional data management system with functions for data storage, organisation, retrieval, and statistical analysis — supporting the study and preservation of linguistic and terminological diversity.

The system’s technical capabilities provide significant advantages for both scientific research and practical application in linguistics.
Thanks to innovative solutions, Biolexipedia is the first database of its kind designed for research in linguistics, terminology, and translation studies, as well as for gathering and analyzing statistical data.
The data management system includes the following resources:
67,450 scientific (Latin) names of organisms,
85,805 organism names in various languages (primarily Latvian, as well as English, German, Russian, Estonian, Lithuanian, and others),
1,657 proposed disease names of organisms
3,013 dictionary entries,
403 terms with definitions, excerpted from various publications, including 7,826 articles and 718 monographs
As of the end of January 2024, the Biolexipedia database includes entries from 8,544 literature sources.
In total, 594,756 record units have been registered in the databases, linked to scientific names, and 9,590 records have been added to the organism taxonomy tree, which displays the taxonomic classification of organism names.
Main User Groups and Use Cases
For Terminologists
In terminology work, it is often necessary to compare previously used organism names with those in updated classification systems. Biolexipedia not only compiles this information, but also supports the creation of new terms in local languages based on existing taxonomy. This provides valuable support to both technical translators and authors of scientific texts.
For Translators
The system includes organism names, plant variety names, dictionary entries, and biological terms with definitions. It helps translators find accurate equivalents when translating from the target to the source language — especially for plant and animal names.
Biolexipedia provides access to all linked organism names in local languages, along with additional information such as:
- the number of publications referencing this term,
- equivalents in other languages,
- and the earliest and latest publication years associated with each entry.
For Students, Lecturers, and Researchers
The system offers an excellent opportunity to develop skills in database use — including search functionality, data analysis, and drawing conclusions about organism names, their diversity across local languages, and their scientific classification.
