About Science in VUAS
Ventspils University of Applied Sciences (VUAS) conducts high-quality research that contributes to scientific advancement and supports the practical application of knowledge for the development of society and the national economy.
Main fields of Research
The field of Natural sciences
(ERI VIRAC and FIT)
Research in
natural science is carried out by the
Engineering Research Institute “Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Centre” (ERI VIRAC) and the Faculty of Information Technologies (FIT). Key research areas include astronomy and astrophysics, engineering, mathematical modeling, signal processing, space technologies, ICT, electronics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.
The field of Social sciences
(FEM)
Research in social sciences is performed by the Faculty of Economics and Management (FEM), focusing on entrepreneurship, innovation, regional economy and economics, with an emphasis on practical solutions for sustainable development.
The field of Humanities and arts
(FoTS)
Research is conducted by the Faculty of Translation Studies, with special attention to applied linguistics, contrastive linguistics, and translatology, addressing issues of language use, translation practices, and intercultural communication.
Major tasks of the science development defined in the development strategy of VUAS for the period from 2021 to 2027:
- To strengthen scientific excellence in strategic specialization fields of VUAS: natural sciences, social sciences and humanities and arts.
- To expand national and international cooperation in science and research.
- To facilitate knowledge transfer and commercialization.
- To create and strengthen the scientific research capacity and infrastructure of VUAS.
To ensure research-based studies and to strengthen the research capacity, the scientific activity of VUAS is oriented towards the large involvement of bachelor, master, and doctoral students in research and towards the maintenance and development of research infrastructure. Scientific activity is being organized so that it is possible to ensure increasing scientific capacity and renewal, knowledge and technology transfer, and close cooperation with partners at national and international levels. Through close collaboration between faculties and research institute, VUAS fosters innovation, knowledge transfer, and scientific excellence, contributing to regional and international development.
On 20 May 2013, VUAS received the status of scientific institution (registered in the Registry of Scientific Institutions), confirming that it has fulfilled the national criteria for a scientific institution: at least half of all academic personnel are holders of a Doctor of Science degree, the higher education institution publishes scientific articles and has scientific infrastructure at its disposal, etc.
