Since autumn 2022, the project “Efficient Environmental and Animal Welfare Farm Monitoring" has been actively developing a digital solution for Latvia's livestock sector. This solution aims to ensure centralized record-keeping and analysis of farm data while promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly farming practices.
At the project's inception, a comprehensive assessment of the needs of livestock farms was conducted. The experience of Finland was also evaluated during an exchange visit focused on the application of digital technologies in dairy farming.
Significant progress has been made in collaboration with agricultural organizations, researchers, consultants, and farmers. Modules for dairy monitoring and manure management are well underway, and work has commenced on modules for beef cattle and sheep monitoring. The project is led by the Latvian Rural Advisory and Training Centre (LLKC), with contributions from farmer organizations (GLAB, LAAA, LZF, SCE E-piim, and the Latvian Holstein Cattle Breeders Association), livestock farms (Adams Farm, Lazdu mājas, Nākotne, and Mežoki), and the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU). These partners provide valuable insights to ensure the monitoring system meets farmers' needs. Programming for the system is being carried out by Ventspils University of Applied Sciences.
Collaboration with the Agricultural Data Centre (LDC) has also begun to facilitate the import of animal and location data from the LDC database. However, to achieve the project's goals more effectively and address current and future farmer needs, broader cooperation with the LDC is essential. At the most recent project partner meeting, participants emphasized that seamless integration with LDC systems is crucial to avoid duplicative data entry across multiple platforms. For maximum efficiency, LDC systems should support both data import and export functionalities.
The project is scheduled for completion by June 30, 2025.

The system is being developed under Measure 16.1, “Support for European Innovation Partnership for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability.” The total planned cost of the system is €500,000, with 90% funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and the remaining 10% covered by project partners.
Note: The Latvian Rural Advisory and Training Centre represents the European Innovation Partnership (EIP) network in Latvia. One of its key responsibilities is to disseminate information about innovations and related projects in Latvia and Europe.
