On 1 November, Aiga Bādere, Lecturer at the Faculty of Translation Studies of Ventspils University of Applied Sciences and Director of the Professional Bachelor's Study Programme, participated in the conference "Latvian in the European Union - Mutual Learning and Education".
This conference, devoted to Latvian language within the EU, took place for the 17th time and was organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia in cooperation with the Directorate General for Translation of the European Commission, the EC Representation in Latvia and the State Language Centre. Aiga Badere presented a paper in the first session of the conference together with experts from the EC Directorate-General for Translation, the Customs Administration in Latvia, Riga Technical University and the Directorate-General for Multilingualism of the Court of Justice of the EU. The paper "Future-oriented education in a constantly changing environment - the different facets of the translation profession" focused on future-oriented education of translators, with particular reference to the experience of the VUAS Faculty of Translation Studies, professional development of translators, cooperation with industry and public education. The value of cooperation with industry, for example in the provision of student internships, and the importance of public education in raising awareness of the importance of translation and of translation as a multifaceted profession, changing but never losing its relevance, were highlighted.
