Academic Research in English I: Scientific Argumentation (master level)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The study course develops students’ academic writing and scientific argumentation skills in English at master’s level. During the course, students acquire an understanding of the specific features of English academic discourse, the structure of scientific argumentation, the requirements of academic style and register, as well as the principles of research-based text production in the context of digital humanities and digital culture.

CONTENT

1. Functions of academic English in the context of digital humanities.
2. Types and genres of scientific discourse.
3. Thesis statement formulation.
4. Critical analysis of sources, scientific citation.
5. Discursive strategies: defining, comparing, polemics, and positioning.
6. Scientific rhetoric.
