Linda Ozola-Ozoliņa Receives Prestigious AABS Award for Students
Linda Ozola-Ozoliņa, a graduate of the professional master’s study program "Translation of Specialized Texts" at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences, has been awarded the prestigious “2024 AABS Undergraduate Paper in Baltic Studies” at the 29th conference of the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies (AABS). The conference, titled “Baltic Way: Unity and Assistance,” was held at Yale University in New Haven, USA. Her research, titled "Latvian environmental term 'purvs': Problems and solutions in Latvian-English-Latvian translations of helonyms", was recognized as an outstanding student paper.
From June 13 to June 16, the AABS conference at Yale University brought together scholars and awarded students for original and practically applicable academic research in various fields. Linda Ozola-Ozoliņa received the student award for her research exploring challenges and solutions in translating the Latvian environmental term "purvs" (swamp) in Latvian-English-Latvian helonym translations.
Linda Ozola-Ozoliņa is a 2024 graduate of the master’s program “Translation of Specialized Texts” at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences. In 2022, she earned her professional bachelor’s degree from the same university with a thesis on helonym translation problems and solutions, which was graded “outstanding” and also earned her an AABS award. Linda’s research interests focus on translation and terminology.
Linda has contributed as a research assistant to the project “Smart Information System for Specialized Biological Lexis to Support Research and Preserve Linguistic Diversity” (2021-2023), implemented by Ventspils University of Applied Sciences and the Institute of Horticulture. She was involved in the development of a multilingual dictionary of botanical terms and has co-authored and individually published scientific articles, as well as presented her research at conferences.

Starting from the 2024/2025 academic year, the professional master’s program “Translation of Specialized Texts” will be offered under the new title “Translation and Terminology.” Applications for the program will open on July 16.
