Professor of Ventspils University of Applied Sciences Jānis Sīlis receives a Certificate of Commendation from the President of Latvia

At the Riga Castle, this year, on July 22, President Egils Levits presented a Certificate of Commendation to Jānis Sīlis, Professor of the Faculty of Translation Studies at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences (VUAS), Doctor of Philology. Appreciation was expressed for a significant contribution to the development of the linguistics and translation industry in Latvia.

Presenting a Certificate of Commendation to Professor J. Sīlis, the President praised his contribution to the development and research of the translation industry: “I appreciate your long-term professional activity in the field of translation science and its history research. Your knowledge and excellent sense of language, the talents of a pedagogue and education strategist have allowed to develop excellent translation programmes at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences, raise the quality of higher education in the country, and to form a capable and talented generation of young translators.”

“The President's decision came as a great positive surprise and a deep satisfaction that my 47 years of work in higher education and science field have been so highly valued,” said the professor.

Certificate of Commendation of the President is a way of expressing appreciation for merits, significant work and investment for the good of Latvia’s State and society. It is granted at the initiative of the President. Commendation Certificate was created at the beginning of 2016 by President Raimonds Vējonis. Since the first Certificate of Commendation that was presented to Maestro Raimonds Pauls, 37 Certificates of Commendation have been presented.
