On the 23rd and 24th of October, Ventspils University of Applied Sciences hosted the conference ''Ventspils Parallel VIII. The Book - a Testimony of Time and Culture''. On the first day of the conference, experts, researchers and academics spoke on various topics related to books, writing and translation.
On the 24th of October, the conference continued as a literary workshop. The students of the Faculty of Translation Studies started an important project - the creation of a virtual book "Ventspils Parallel V-VIII", which brought together the papers and videos of the previous conferences. Illustrating the path of the book from the author to the reader, the creation of a virtual book of the previous conferences was dedicated.
Students of the Translation and Language Technology programme were involved in a literary workshop led by Astra Skrābane, Jānis Veckrācis, Aiga Badere and Aiga Veckalne. The students' task was to digitise and process articles, papers, video recordings, photographs and newspaper coverage from previous conferences. The task was not easy, as the materials had to be scanned, converted, formatted, transcribed, translated and edited, but it certainly encouraged cooperation and responsibility. The students tried to use different language technologies to process the material, while at the same time seeing the importance of human input. Students listened to instructions, tried to understand the unknown and the incomprehensible, worked in groups and were clearly aware that a book is not created in a day.
