Jul 03, 2020
Ventspils University of Applied Sciences (VUAS) in regards to the COVID-19 pandemic is informing about the current situation in Latvia and our future plans.

For now, we may surely say that the worst is over for us in Latvia and the neighboring countries. However, throughout the pandemic Ventspils remained a safe haven for us, and Latvia has been one of the of the corona virus pandemic’s success stories. March 12 when the state of emergency was declared stands out as a pivotal moment in Latvia’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. All studies immediately went from face-to-face learning to remote learning. Remote learning continued until the end of semester. Despite the slowdown with some restrictions (Latvia during this time never had a complete lockdown), life went on and on June 28 VUAS successfully concluded the academic year 2019/20.

Regarding Academic year 2020/21 our current plans for the upcoming autumn semester are these:

The academic year at VUAS will start on September 01 and studies will be conducted both on-site and simultaneously online (to ensure that our students who have not managed to arrive in Ventspils in time for studies can follow lectures until they are able to join us).

Academic 2020/21 year in dates:

  • AUTUMN SEMESTER: September 01, 2020 − January 31, 2021
  • SPRING SEMESTER: February 08, 2021 − June 27, 2021

We are maintaining both incoming and outgoing student exchanges, but keeping the student well-being our utmost priority.

Applications for incoming Erasmus students are accepted until July 15. Application procedure and course catalog is available HERE.

Applications for full-time international degree seeking students are accepted until July 31. Application procedure is available HERE.

Of course, as it is hard to predict the further spread of the virus. We hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. If the situation in the country will worsen, the restrictions adopted in the country will be considered, which may also include the organization of immediate remote learning. In this case we will do our best to provide all students and partners with the information and necessary support as soon as possible.

Let's hope for the best and that the Autumn semester won't bring unpleasant surprises and we all will have chance to enjoy a fantastic semester.

Dear colleagues and friends, Last Thursday marked a dark moment in the history of Europe and the world as we became witness of a brutal and unprovoked act of war by Russia against a sovereign nation in the centre of Europe - Ukraine. We are deeply saddened by this. We at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences stand with the people of Ukraine at this difficult time and join the international community in condemning on the strongest possible terms the act of illegal aggression. We are prepared to offer every possible support within our means to staff, researchers and students at your institution. We are open look into the possibility to host your staff shorter or longer for periods of time. Once again - we stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and our thoughts are with all those directly or indirectly impacted by this invasion. Yours sincerely, Dr. Karlis Kreslins Rector of the Ventspils University of Applied Sciences Foto: Shutterstock
