A bachelor’s degree is not enough - the experience of electronics engineer Klāvs

Aug 04, 2020

“Ventspils is an excellent base for a student to develop and grow,” says Klāvs Reinis Ozols, a student of Ventspils University of Applied Sciences (VUAS). In 2019, Klāvs graduated from the Faculty of Information Technologies program “Electronics” and without stopping, immediately continued his studies in the master’s study program of the same name, so that next year he would be a certified electronics engineer. The path of growth for Klāvs at VUAS can be described as - doing absolutely everything that the university offers! In his opinion, this is the right recipe for success and can't stop at the bachelor's degree!

After graduating from high school in Aizpute, Klāvs’ choice in favor of studies in Ventspils was motivated by the reputation of VUAS, the quality of studies and, of course, the availability of budget places. The future electronics engineer points out that student life in Ventspils is affordable - dormitory is available, public transport and various services are available with great discounts, and sports opportunities for students are completely free of charge. “All opportunities are in Ventspils, the student only needs to take them and do,” says Klāvs. Additional financial support for students is also available in the form of scholarships, so many students do not need to ask for money from their parents or look for work in addition to their studies.

Sport is Klāvs’ passion, which he has turned into work. Klāvs is the sports coordinator of VUAS Student Council, organizing various sports events and classes for VUAS students: “I invite all first-year students to use free sports opportunities. An active lifestyle brings us together and gives us the opportunity to create a sense of community!” In addition to working in the Student Council, Klāvs also works in the Engineering Department of VUAS as a laboratory assistant, providing laboratory activities and help to the newest students in the study process.

It is no secret that a large number of students are willing to exchange experiences within the ERASMUS+ program. Klāvs is also one of them who has actively used the opportunities provided by this program, and in the previous study years in summers he went to the neighboring country of Estonia to create a nanosatellite at the Tartu Observatory together with the ESTCube organization. An even bigger challenge for Klāvs is that in the autumn he will go to the Netherlands to develop his Master’s thesis at ASTRON, which will help to build a new type of antenna array.

“Ventspils is the right place for motivated students - there are so many opportunities here that you only need to be able to use them and then the path to success is guaranteed,” says Klāvs.

Dear colleagues and friends, Last Thursday marked a dark moment in the history of Europe and the world as we became witness of a brutal and unprovoked act of war by Russia against a sovereign nation in the centre of Europe - Ukraine. We are deeply saddened by this. We at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences stand with the people of Ukraine at this difficult time and join the international community in condemning on the strongest possible terms the act of illegal aggression. We are prepared to offer every possible support within our means to staff, researchers and students at your institution. We are open look into the possibility to host your staff shorter or longer for periods of time. Once again - we stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and our thoughts are with all those directly or indirectly impacted by this invasion. Yours sincerely, Dr. Karlis Kreslins Rector of the Ventspils University of Applied Sciences Foto: Shutterstock
