A Spanish lecturer at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences has successfully defended his doctoral thesis in Latvia
Lecturer from Spain, Rafael Martin Calvo, has successfully defended his doctoral thesis. He has graduated from the joint doctoral program “Linguistics” offered by Ventspils University of Applied Sciences and University of Liepaja. He also teaches Spanish language.
Rafael Martin Calvo has successfully defended his research, “An Analytical Framework for the Description of Evaluative Morphology Resources: Contrastive Analysis of Evaluative Forms in Spanish and Latvian.”
Andra Kalnača, a Professor from the University of Latvia and one of the paper’s reviewers, has stated that this research not only incorporates the idea of evaluative morphology and methodology in the field of Latvian linguistics but also the use of the principles of linguistic typology. Literature of a different time and various directions of the theory of evaluative morphology and empirical analysis have been considered, including all possible instances of word formation in the linguistics of Latvian and Spanish, where evaluative semantics is present in both language pairs.
At this moment, Rafael Martin Calvo calls Latvia his home, although he says that upon arrival he was considered a guest, but as time went on, his colleagues and friends understood that Rafael Martin Calvo was here to stay and they started to see him as one of their own. Rafael Martin Calvo himself states that he feels accepted here – he calls the staff of Ventspils University of Applied Sciences his family. His immense scientific interest in Latvian and Spanish proves his place in Latvia and Ventspils University of Applied Sciences and also accelerates the inclusion of Spanish in Latvia.
We are proud of Rafael Martin Calvo’s achievements and sincerely congratulate him on his obtained scientific degree in linguistics and literature science.
