Digital database “Academic Language” is now available to users
Language is the tool through which we communicate and express our emotions. We use language to learn, discuss, and argue. Language is also used to convey scientific insights, new theories, and discoveries. Researchers from Liepāja University and Ventspils University of Applied Sciences have developed an app designed for the unified use of Latvian language of science.
The digital database “Academic Language” (“Zinātnes valoda”) is available both online and on smartphones at www.zinatnesvaloda.lv. It will be useful for writing scientific texts, as it is intended for a wide range of users – from students and pupils to doctoral candidates and researchers.
The database is divided into three parts:
- descriptions of scientific written texts at three levels – school, university, and research;
- a glossary that explains the terms and concepts used in the descriptions of scientific texts;
- standardized phrase examples, organized and classified according to the structure of a scientific text (introduction, main body, conclusion), and also usable for linking text units and creating references.
The developers of the digital database share: “For students, the digital database will help them better understand how to write various types of scientific texts, such as report, annotation, thesis, outline, argumentative essay, summaries, and student research project. Each text type description includes its translation in English, Russian, and German, an explanation of the text type, as well as a detailed characterization of its structure. The descriptions are supplemented with references to literature where more detailed information about the specific text can be found.
For those who want to dig deeper into the specifics of scientific language, a glossary will be useful, explaining the terms and concepts used in the descriptions of scientific text types, such as bibliographic reference, hypothesis, paraphrase, research object, plagiarism, and others.
The database also includes commonly used phrases in Latvian language of science, which will be useful when writing more extensive scientific texts.”
The creators of the database encourage everyone to respect and love their language, and to learn how to use it in accordance with language norms. May this application be a helpful tool on the journey towards clear thinking and expressing it in the proper Latvian language of science!
