Faculty of Translation Studies

About the faculty

The Faculty of Translation Studies offers four study programmes: the Translation professional bachelor’s study programme Translation and Language Technologies, the international study programme Intercultural Communication, the professional master’s study programme Translation of Legal Texts and, in collaboration with Liepāja University, the inter-university Linguistics doctoral study programme. Study directions have been accredited for the maximum period of six years.

The study programmes at FTS are up-to-date, dynamic, and versatile, using the latest translation technologies. Teaching staff of the faculty are highly qualified language experts, experienced lecturers, and practicing translators and interpreters.

In 2012, in the framework of the project Evaluation of higher education study programmes and proposals for improvement of quality, international experts recognised the VUAS Translation study direction as the best in Latvia.

FTS programmes offer the possibility to specialize in translation among multiple EU working languages.

The faculty has modern equipment for the acquisition of verbal and written translation skills, including a linguistics office, translation booths, and translation software.

The quality of education has been recognised by employers, foreign experts, graduates, and students. This quality is confirmed by the rating of Latvian universities in 2014, at which time Ventspils University of Applied Sciences ranked sixth, which was recognized as the fastest increase from 2012 – from sixteenth to eighteenth place to sixth place.

The master’s Translation of legal texts study program has been included in the prestigious cooperation network European Master’s Degree in Translation, which is organised by the European Commission. It is a brand of quality for higher education translation programmes at the master’s level, complying with the harmonised standards in translation education.

Career opportunities

The qualification level of graduates of the Faculty of Translation Studies allows them to carry out translation assignments in state and local government institutions and companies, at private companies, including translation offices and agencies, as well as in the international labour market for translation in European Union institutions.
