Master's Students in Translation Studies Took Part in a Virtual Visit to the European Commission's Directorate-General for Translation
On November 22, the European Commission organized a virtual visit to the Directorate-General for Translation, which was also attended by students of the master’s program "Translation of Applied Texts" at the Faculty of Translation Studies of Ventspils University of Applied Sciences. The event was very well attended (approximately 800 participants), and our translation program students had the opportunity to learn all about the work of interpreters and translators at the Directorate-General for Translation and other EU institutions. The event organizers provided an overview of the volume of documents translated by EU institutions and explained what computer-assisted and machine translation tools, as well as artificial intelligence tools, are used by translators in EU institutions.
Our students had a separate meeting with translators from the Latvian language translation department, where they could get answers to all their questions about eligibility requirements, application requirements, and find out how to apply for an internship or prepare the necessary documents to apply for a job in the EU institutions. Representatives of the Directorate-General for Translation emphasized that interpreters and translators must have a very good knowledge of two working languages – the official languages of the European Union – but that Latvian must be known at the highest level. This is the language into which the translators of the Latvian language department will translate.
Adrija Enrika Ēdele, a first-year student in the master's program, says: "It was a great event! I was very impressed by the fact that all the people currently working in EU institutions are not unknown figures, but real and well-known people who have also studied translation, just as we are doing now. This gives me hope that it is possible to get a well-paid job in the EU institutions after completing my translation studies."
