Monograph "The Language of Science: Style, Text, Context"

Jun 21, 2021

Researchers from Ventspils University of Applied Sciences and Liepaja University have collaborated on a monograph titled "The Language of Science: Style, Text, and Context," resulting from two years of research. The monograph was created as part of the Latvian Council of Science's fundamental and applied research project "Latvian Language of Science in Intralingual Aspect." No. lzp-2018 / 2 - 0131.

The connection between the language of science and ordinary language, scientists' strategy and tactics in choosing the language of science, multilingualism in science, and the history of research in the Latvian language of science are all dealt with in this monograph. It also discusses the potential for developing a classification of scientific writings and suggests a categorization for texts used in Latvian scientific communication. The macrostructure of Latvian scientific writing in several domains of research, as well as the results of its microstructural analysis, are addressed, and undesired aberrations from scientific language style are summarized.

A bibliography of studies on scientific language and communication in English, Russian, Latvian, Lithuanian, and German has been added to the monograph.

Students and teachers, students and lecturers, researchers, and anybody interested can profit from this volume.

The monograph is available for purchase at the Academy of Sciences' "Zinātne" bookshop or online at www.zinatnesgramatas.lv.

Dear colleagues and friends, Last Thursday marked a dark moment in the history of Europe and the world as we became witness of a brutal and unprovoked act of war by Russia against a sovereign nation in the centre of Europe - Ukraine. We are deeply saddened by this. We at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences stand with the people of Ukraine at this difficult time and join the international community in condemning on the strongest possible terms the act of illegal aggression. We are prepared to offer every possible support within our means to staff, researchers and students at your institution. We are open look into the possibility to host your staff shorter or longer for periods of time. Once again - we stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and our thoughts are with all those directly or indirectly impacted by this invasion. Yours sincerely, Dr. Karlis Kreslins Rector of the Ventspils University of Applied Sciences Foto: Shutterstock
