New Series of Lectures “Science and Culture – for Society”
This academic year, the VUAS Lifelong Learning Center is offering a new series of lectures, “Science and Culture – for Society,” featuring monthly Saturday lectures delivered by prominent Latvian researchers and outstanding public figures.
The series will begin with a lecture by Ojārs Spārītis, an art historian, academician, and expert in cultural heritage preservation and restoration.
The first lecture is scheduled for 20 September at 11.30–14.30. Ojārs Spārītis will speak on the following topics:
- The manor as an economic and cultural phenomenon;
- The life of manor residences in the 20th and 21st centuries;
- Latvia’s sacred heritage and its renewal;
- The role of the Courland nobility in the restoration of the sarcophagus of the Duke of Courland and church buildings.

A lecture by Juris Dzelme, Senior Researcher at the Institute of Chemical Physics of the University of Latvia, is scheduled for 11th October. In addition to his research in chemical physics, his academic interests extend to educational management, philosophy, psychology, and the arts. His lecture will therefore focus on the opportunities, development, and challenges of artificial intelligence.
The lecture will cover:
- Digitalization, robotization, artificial intelligence (AI) and superintelligence;
- Emotions, free will and creativity in artificial and natural neural networks (AI and the psyche);
- Ethics, values and goal modelling in AI;
- Supporting communities in an AI-regulated environment through art and philosophy, with the help of physics and psychology.
On 1st November, Jānis Dripe, Adviser on Architecture and Cultural Policy at the National Library of Latvia, will deliver a lecture covering the following topics:
- World-renowned modernist architect Gunārs Birkerts (1925–2025);
- The National Library of Latvia and library architecture in Latvia;
- Contemporary architectural processes in Lithuania;
- Contemporary architectural processes in Estonia.
A lecture by Inese Čakstiņa-Dzērve, Senior Researcher at the Institute of Microbiology and Virology, Riga Stradiņš University, is scheduled for 13th December. Having completed multiple research fellowships in the United States, she has become a leading expert in genetics and cell transplantation within Latvia’s reproductive medicine community. Her lecture will address precision medicine, which focuses on personalised approaches to the study and treatment of diseases, taking into account patients’ genetic profile, lifestyle, and other factors. Additionally, she will discuss topics including artificial insemination and related studies.
