Madina, a 3rd year student of VUAS, is from Uzbekistan, and her journey of studies abroad has been full of surprises. Over the past years at VUAS, Madina has not only moved to Ventspils, fallen in love with the beautiful sea and the city of Ventspils, but also this year, thanks to the Erasmus+ mobility, she will spend Christmas in the sunny city of Porto in Portugal. Continue reading to learn more about her story!

Hello, my name is Madina, I’m from Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Currently I’m in my last year of studying Intercultural communication, and right now, through participating in the Erasmus+ programme, I’ve come to Porto, Portugal.

Ventspils has a very special place in my heart. The city is so beautiful and quiet, and I think I have fallen in love with the sea there. For someone who only saw mountains and forests while growing up, it was an unbelievable experience. I’m a person who prefers calming and cozy places, and Ventspils is exactly what is needed.

This year – 2021 – is leaving me with mixed feelings. At the beginning of the year, I was in my hometown because the classes were online, so I missed Ventspils, but in summer and autumn, I had a chance to spend some time there. Afterwards, I came to Porto for the exchange programme, and it is wonderful here.

Porto is a beautiful city, everything here is new for me, so I was very excited about many things. The scenery here is amazing, and the people are very friendly and open. And, personally, I really like the desserts here, there are so many variations – I can't even choose.

Also, the sunsets here are so stunning – we like to go to a bridge and watch them.

I’m going to celebrate the new year in Porto, and I hope to travel more to see even more beautiful places next year.

Dear colleagues and friends, Last Thursday marked a dark moment in the history of Europe and the world as we became witness of a brutal and unprovoked act of war by Russia against a sovereign nation in the centre of Europe - Ukraine. We are deeply saddened by this. We at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences stand with the people of Ukraine at this difficult time and join the international community in condemning on the strongest possible terms the act of illegal aggression. We are prepared to offer every possible support within our means to staff, researchers and students at your institution. We are open look into the possibility to host your staff shorter or longer for periods of time. Once again - we stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and our thoughts are with all those directly or indirectly impacted by this invasion. Yours sincerely, Dr. Karlis Kreslins Rector of the Ventspils University of Applied Sciences Foto: Shutterstock
