Progress of the Project DACE in the Second Quarter of 2026
The second quarter of project DACE was marked by a small but significant first achievement: project participant and student N. Muhaņko successfully defended his bachelor’s thesis at the Department of Chemistry of the Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences of the University of Latvia, thereby obtaining his bachelor’s degree. His thesis, “Study of the Chemical Evolution of Mg, Na, Fe, Ti, and Ca Compounds in the Interstellar Medium Using the ALCHEMIC Program,” represents the first diploma thesis in the narrow field of astrochemistry, or molecular astrophysics, in Latvia since the doctoral thesis of the project leader, J. Kalvāns, in 2013.
Apart from this achievement, project activities continued as planned.
In Activity 1, concerning radiative transfer, the temperature of dust with different chemical compositions in the circumstellar medium was modelled, taking into account the effects of photons emitted by the central star. A strong dependence of dust temperature on its chemical composition was confirmed. An instability in the RADMC-3D program was also identified, occurring when one billion or more photon packages are propagated through the circumstellar medium. An analysis of the RADMC-3D code was initiated with the aim of incorporating gas–dust heat exchange, which is not currently supported by the program, and determining the cause of the aforementioned instability.
In Activity 2, focused on improving the astrochemical model, the surface chemistry of interstellar metallic elements on interstellar dust, developed as part of the aforementioned bachelor’s thesis, is being supplemented by the inclusion of surface reactions involving all remaining neutral molecules from the UDfA22 database in the reaction network. These reactions are being obtained through three main approaches: from the UDfA22 gas-phase reaction database; from other chemical databases and relevant literature sources; and by generating specific classes of reactions anew. This extensive work has been carried out intensively and is expected to occupy most of the period leading up to the midpoint of the project.
