Reflections on 2020

Dec 16, 2020

As 2020 nears the end, it's time for a yearly reflection on the last 12 months. This year will definitely stand out for students, especially those who travelled to study abroad  Anna is our student from Russia and you can read how she experienced this year in the #RightPlace

My 2020

Time will pass, but all of us will still have shivers when hearing "2020".

This year turned the whole world and reality upside down and probably many people are happy it is coming to an end. Despite all the negative emotions, I can still distinguish some positive things. When the quarantine started, I was happy to stay in Latvia. I knew how bad it was in my home country, Russia, and understood that Latvia was one of the safest places in the world to spend my quarantine in.

Moreover, not much has changed since in Ventspils a small number of people were likely to spend most of their time outside. So, I guess it was easy for locals to stay at home and follow the rules.

I remember how fast all the measures were taken: all the shops were equipped with the necessary tools, the regulations were set and I felt really safe.

In addition, in Ventspils there are many quiet places where I could walk and have some fresh air, still keeping the distance: parks, the beautiful beach, forest, etc.

I heard many stories about the situation in different countries, where neither the people really wanted to follow the rules, nor the government itself set any of them.

Yet, here in Ventspils everything was fine, people respected each other, which made me feel even better and avoid much stress.

During these hard times it is very easy to panic and feel vulnerable. That's why we need to mind not only our physical condition, but also the mental one. If you're reading this article and experiencing hard times, remember to take care of yourself and to do something you really like and enjoy. Take care and relax, these are the things, which can help you to be sane and healthy. Stay strong and we will go through it together!

Dear colleagues and friends, Last Thursday marked a dark moment in the history of Europe and the world as we became witness of a brutal and unprovoked act of war by Russia against a sovereign nation in the centre of Europe - Ukraine. We are deeply saddened by this. We at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences stand with the people of Ukraine at this difficult time and join the international community in condemning on the strongest possible terms the act of illegal aggression. We are prepared to offer every possible support within our means to staff, researchers and students at your institution. We are open look into the possibility to host your staff shorter or longer for periods of time. Once again - we stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and our thoughts are with all those directly or indirectly impacted by this invasion. Yours sincerely, Dr. Karlis Kreslins Rector of the Ventspils University of Applied Sciences Foto: Shutterstock
