Second Ventspils University of Applied Sciences Student to Begin Internship at the European Space Agency
In July, Mārtiņš Leimants, a student of the "Electronics Engineering" study program at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences, will travel to Noordwijk, the Netherlands, to start work at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC). Mārtiņš is the second VUAS student to intern at the European Space Agency (ESA). In this place, only the most capable young specialists from around the world are allowed to gain experience.
Mārtiņš Leimants will begin his internship on July 1, and it will last for one year, until June 30, 2026. If he proves his skills, the internship may be extended for another year. He will work in the Optoelectronics Section (TEC-MME) as a Laboratory Support Engineer. His responsibilities will include integration of image sensor testing systems, development of testing methods, automation, and data processing.
A graduate of Liepāja State Gymnasium No. 1, Mārtiņš gained the knowledge and skills for this unique opportunity through the "Electronics Engineering" program at VUAS. "This is a unique opportunity to learn from world-class professionals and to gain not only knowledge but also practical skills in the research of electro-optical systems. I want to bring this experience back to Latvia," says Mārtiņš. After the internship, he plans to return to Latvia to continue working at SIA Bitlake Technologies, contributing to the development of Latvia's space technology sector.
"Our goal is not only to prepare industry professionals but also to enable them to integrate into an international environment of excellence and later transfer this experience to Latvia," says the program director, Jānis Šate.
The opportunity to intern at ESA is the result of cooperation between the space agency and Latvia. VUAS is grateful to the Ministry of Education and Science for ensuring the opportunities available to Latvia as an associate member state.
"This is already the second VUAS student to pass ESA's rigorous selection process successfully. In 2022, Rodrigo Laurinovičs went to the European Space Agency and spent two years there. If having one student at ESA is a great achievement and recognition, then having two marks a quality trend, confirming the excellence of our study program," notes Jānis Šate.
