VUAS participated in European Researchers' Night 2019
On September 27th, Ventspils University of Applied Sciences (VUAS) participated in activities of European Researchers' Night 2019. The aim of activities was to promote public interest and awareness, especially among young people, about science and the profession of scientists, to introduce the public to the impact of various scientific fields on daily life, and to provide the opportunity to get to know scientists' work and working environments in person.
VUAS invited visitors to the Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Centre in Irbene, where they could visit the radio telescope complex free of charge - a parabolic antenna with a diameter of 32 meters and its infrastructure. Visitors could walk through the 700-meter-long underground tunnel connecting the radio telescope, as well as view the RT-8 tower, which houses an exhibition about the historical operations of antennas RT-16 and RT-32 during the Soviet era, and the adjacent 16-meter diameter antenna dish located on the ground and available for viewing. Researchers' Night visitors had also a unique opportunity to see the large 32-meter diameter antenna dish being rotated to conduct global research.
The event offered the opportunity to view stands and they had a chance to:
- get acquainted with the Real Sense™ system, which helps medical professionals perform 3D manipulations and facilitate surgical planning;
- view methods of 3D scanning results of human limbs for orthosis creation;
- observe how human body and extremity recognition methods work, applied in the computer vision industry (video games, security, telemedicine, etc.);
- explore how artificial intelligence algorithms can be used to create artistic elements that look like real paintings.
Activities were carried out in the framework of the Project “European Researchers’ Night in Latvia 2018–2019”, H2020-MSCA-NIGHT-2018, No 819129
