A student from Ventspils University of Applied Sciences receives an award in a European-level translation contest
In April, a first-year student of the Master’s study programme “Translation of LSP (Language for Special Purposes) Texts” at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences (VUAS) took part in the “2022 eMT Challenge”, a prestigious contest for master’s level translation programmes. The event brought together 112 students from universities across Europe.
The challenge revolved around automated machine translation quality estimation. Participants had to complete a multiple-choice exercise and write a mini-essay. They could choose any of the EU’s 24 official languages.
Competing against 112 participants, VUAS student Sonora Bogdanova ranked among the top three finalists. Participants from the University of Turku (Finland) and the University of Bologna (Italy) were also among the winners.
Sonora shares her thoughts on the competition: “The description of the eMT challenge and the 60-minute time limit made both me and my coursemates a bit nervous. The challenge seemed impossible, especially considering we had to analyze 15 sentences and then write a brief essay about them. However, when we opened the task, it turned out that we needed to evaluate which percentage rating most closely matched the machine translation. In the essay, I tried to group and describe the main mistakes and provide my suggestions and solutions. There was enough time, so I made the essay structured, with three paragraphs, and once submitted, all I could do was hope for the best!”
As seen, Sonora’s hopes were fulfilled, and her knowledge and skills placed her among the top participants in the competition! Congratulations! We are proud of you!
