European Languages Day - "New Home Latvia"

Sep 22, 2023

On Monday, 25 September, at 16:00, students from Ventspils University of Applied Sciences will gather at the Ventspils Music Library to celebrate the European Day of Languages in the event "New Home - Latvia".

Students from different countries who have come to Ventspils thanks to the ERASMUS+ student exchange programme will get to know Ventspils tourism offer at visitventspils.com, which offers information in eight languages: Latvian, Lithuanian, Estonian, English, German, French, Russian and Chinese. Other students who have not had a chance to explore the city are also invited. During the event you will have the opportunity to earn your first Ventspils money - vents - and learn how to use them. The students will also play a language game organized by Europe Direct Ventspils.

A special language that everyone in the world understands is the language of music. Young people will have the opportunity to take a guided tour of the building, getting to know both the spaces available to the audience on a daily basis and behind the scenes, and to learn about the history of the concert hall, its secrets, furnishings, unique instruments and extensive possibilities. The tour will end with a demonstration of the organ and the unique vertical piano "470i"

Every year since 2001, European Union (EU) Member States celebrate European Day of Languages at the end of September, with a special focus on European languages, linguistic diversity and language learning. Promoting European languages is a core value of the EU institutions - all EU institutions work with all the languages of the EU Member States on a daily basis. The EU has 24 official languages.

The event is organized by Europe Direct Ventspils and the Ventspils Music Library. ED Ventspils is funded by the European Commission. The event is also supported by the concert hall "Latvija" and the Ventspils Music Secondary School.

Dear colleagues and friends, Last Thursday marked a dark moment in the history of Europe and the world as we became witness of a brutal and unprovoked act of war by Russia against a sovereign nation in the centre of Europe - Ukraine. We are deeply saddened by this. We at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences stand with the people of Ukraine at this difficult time and join the international community in condemning on the strongest possible terms the act of illegal aggression. We are prepared to offer every possible support within our means to staff, researchers and students at your institution. We are open look into the possibility to host your staff shorter or longer for periods of time. Once again - we stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and our thoughts are with all those directly or indirectly impacted by this invasion. Yours sincerely, Dr. Karlis Kreslins Rector of the Ventspils University of Applied Sciences Foto: Shutterstock
