The international language company “Skrivanek Baltic” organizes an essay contest “Language – My Opportunity!”. Students from bachelor's and master's study programs at Latvian universities are invited to participate in the contest. The goal is to stir up students' interest in Latvian and Latgalian languages and increase their prestige. The contest winner and an Audience Award winner will receive valuable prizes.
To raise the prestige of Latvian and Latgalian among young people and encourage students to recognize the importance of their native language in their future lives and careers, the language service provider “Skrivanek Baltic” is organizing the essay contest “Language – My Opportunity!” The contest will be launched on March 16th, and students are invited to submit their essays by uploading them to the website www.skrivanek.lv until April 3rd.
In the first part of the contest, the best 50 essays will be selected and sent to a professional jury for evaluation. These essays will also be published on the website, where, from April 14th to April 26th, participants and others can vote for the most interesting essay. The author of the winning essay will receive the Audience Award.
In the second part of the contest, the jury of Latvian and Latgalian experts from “Skrivanek Baltic” will choose one winner by accurately evaluating the works in three categories: relevance to the theme, language usage, creativity, and originality.
“We've noticed that young people today have more opportunities and a strong desire to speak, express themselves, and even think in English. With this essay contest, we want to remind students of the beauty and richness of Latvian and Latgalian and, by encouraging them to work creatively and academically in their native language and take pride in it! We, “Skrivanek Baltic”, are convinced that the more languages a person knows, the richer their inner world becomes, and the easier it will be for them to find an occupation in life that matches their interests and passions. However, the native language will always be the most important, as it provides the foundation for young people to start their journey toward linguistic excellence”, says Vasilijs Ragačevičs, Head of “Skrivanek Baltic”.
The winners will be announced at the end of the contest on April 27th, 2023, via Zoom platform. The winner of the contest will receive the grand prize – an “Apple iPad 10.9" Wi-Fi 64GB (10th Gen)”, while the winner of the Audience Award will receive a €200 cash prize presented by “Skrivanek Baltic” director Vasilijs Ragačevičs.
