When one moves 4481 km away from home, life can get pretty challenging, but if you have great coursemates that support you and if you enjoy what you are studying, life becomes an unforgettable adventure. Regardless of the challenges that the pandemic brought, Arina has graduated and now she remembers her three years at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences with a smile.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Arina, I'm from sunny Tashkent, Uzbekistan. I enjoy reading, music and playing video games.
How did you decide to study in the bachelor lever programme "Intercultural communication and languages"?
When I was about to graduate from lyceum in 2019 in Tashkent, where I studied cultures and languages, I wanted to continue studying these subjects in depth and further expand my knowledge. It was always very interesting and fascinating to me to learn something new about cultural perception of other people as well as learn new languages.
What has been your favourite part about your studies?
My favourite part about studies has been the personal approach of professors and the possibility to learn not only by listening to lectures, but also having a chance to actively participate in classes. I was also very lucky to be in a very international environment of wonderful group mates – we are all very good friends.
Do you have a favourite place in Ventspils?
I would say that I fell in love with Ventspils as soon as I arrived here, living so close to the sea was always my dream. I definitely enjoy spending time on the beach, it is one of my favourite places. I also love Piejūras park because of the tranquillity and green sceneries.
How does it feel to be finished with studies?
Time really does fly. I still cannot realise I have graduated already. I still wish I had more opportunities to study face-to-face, but even with the global pandemic going around, I am still very satisfied with the studies.
You moved so far from Uzbekistan to Latvia - where did you get the courage to make such a decision?
It was a very easy decision for me as I always planned to study abroad, and I considered it as a small step to the endless number of opportunities for my future.
What have been three main things that you have learnt during your time here?
What could you say to students that are only thinking about making such a decision?
No matter how scary it may be, it is definitely worth it. Don’t let such an opportunity slide through – you will regret it later. Do it for self-development, do it to get to know the coolest people you can ever meet that may become your friends for life, and do it for success!
