Ventspils University of Applied Sciences Student Wins Award in European Translation Competition
First-year students of the Ventspils University of Applied Sciences (VUAS) FTS master's program "Translation of Applied Texts" participated in the master's level translation study program competition "2022 eMT challenge", which brought together 112 students from master's level translation study programs across Europe.
The competition tasks were related to assessing the quality of automated machine translation. Participants had to complete multiple-choice tasks and write a short essay, which they could write in any of the 24 official languages of the EU.
VUAS student Sonora Bogdanova ranked among the top three participants out of 112 competitors! Participants from the University of Turku (Finland) and the University of Bologna (Italy) also shared in the glory of victory.
Sonora writes about the competition and her feelings as follows: "The description of the eMT challenge and the 60-minute time limit made both me and my classmates a little nervous. The challenge seemed impossible, considering that we had to evaluate 15 sentences and write a short essay about them. However, when I opened the assignment, I discovered that I had to evaluate which percentage rating was more consistent with machine translation. In my essay, I tried to group the main errors and describe them, also providing my suggestions and solutions. I had enough time, I created a structured essay with three paragraphs, and when I submitted it, all I could do was hope for the best!
As we can see, Sonora's hopes were justified, and her knowledge and skills placed her among the best participants in the competition! Congratulations, we are proud of you!
