Key qualities of a good employee may differ for each institution or company. Today we will introduce you with one of us and you can figure out what is important for being a successful docent and one of the leading employees in the University. Dean of the Faculty of Information Technologies Vairis Caune is a unique personality who, despite his serious position at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences, does not lose his sense of humor. We can confirm that students perceive him as their own because he is helpful and willing to share his experience with others. Find out more about him today!

Please tell me a little bit about yourself!

Simple guy from the countryside, accidentally went to Riga for highschool and then continued my studies in Ventspils and all over the world.

Please tell us about your work and studies, I have heard that you have an abroad experience.

I spent my third year of the Bachelor studies on ERASMUS exchange in Nancy, France. My studies and exams were in French and that has been one of my biggest challenges so far. I continued my research in master's studies and later also in PhD studies. We worked with the Hospital Research Center in Nancy in order to localize the epilogenic areas in patients' brains for people with epilepsy. Also I spent 3 months in Switzerland modelling cooling systems for particle accelerator targets. And 2 months in Mexico working on a bionic hand control system.

France took me in - I met some of my best friends there. We have spent weeks in the mountains skiing and in a small apartment preparing for exams together. I have been to three of their weddings and was responsible for distribution of 40 champagne bottles for a 50 year anniversary of a friend's mother. Mountain climbing is one of my fondest memories- adrenaline rush from being 5m high with no gear other than your shoes and magnesium carbonate on your hands. Pyramids, Switzerland mountains by bike, Brasilian refugee in Latvia for a bachelor party, Swiss mountains with a German hat, French wine, and American T-shirt - all that has been possible because of international experiences and friendships of different nations.

What success and innovations do you see for your faculty in the future (3-5 years)?

We are working constantly to modernise both academic and professional programmes for the ever evolving field of IT. Successful models for remote studies would be a priority for future anti-pandemic solutions, as well as people who want to change their majors.

Dear colleagues and friends, Last Thursday marked a dark moment in the history of Europe and the world as we became witness of a brutal and unprovoked act of war by Russia against a sovereign nation in the centre of Europe - Ukraine. We are deeply saddened by this. We at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences stand with the people of Ukraine at this difficult time and join the international community in condemning on the strongest possible terms the act of illegal aggression. We are prepared to offer every possible support within our means to staff, researchers and students at your institution. We are open look into the possibility to host your staff shorter or longer for periods of time. Once again - we stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and our thoughts are with all those directly or indirectly impacted by this invasion. Yours sincerely, Dr. Karlis Kreslins Rector of the Ventspils University of Applied Sciences Foto: Shutterstock
