Presentation of the results of the project “Smart Complex of Information Systems of Specialized Biology Lexis for the Research and Preservation of Linguistic Diversity” at Bulduri Technical School
On December 15th, Silga Sviķe, the project manager of the Latvian Council of Science project “Smart Complex of Information Systems of Specialized Biology Lexis for the Research and Preservation of Linguistic Diversity”, visited Bulduri Technical School at the invitation of director Ieva Vincovska and Anta Sparinska, a lecturer at the Latvian University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU). During her visit, she introduced the school’s teachers, students, and LBTU lecturers to the resources developed within the project, including the multilingual translating botanical terms dictionary (a mobile app) containing 3000 botanical terms in Latvian-Latin-English-German-Russian, as well as the data management system “Bioleksipēdija”.
BT and LBTU students and teachers had the opportunity to learn about the development story of the botanical terms dictionary, download the dictionary app to their smartphones, and test their knowledge of plant names by completing educational game tasks included in the dictionary. Dr. Anta Sparinska, a biologist, commented on the developed dictionary: “This dictionary is a very useful and even necessary tool for various audiences, including high school students, philology students, translators, as well as students of agriculture, biology, landscape architecture, and geography, as well as gardeners, florists — both professionals and amateurs — who work with plants on a daily basis or as a hobby.”
During the event, Silga Sviķe also introduced the new resource, the data management system “Biolexipedia”, explaining its functionality and potential for organism name research. The teachers acknowledged that this comprehensive resource would be significant for the correct and accurate use of terminology in both academic studies and industry practice and research.
This research has been funded by the Latvian Council of Science, project “Smart Complex of Information Systems of Specialized Biology Lexis for the Research and Preservation of Linguistic Diversity“. No. lzp-2020/1-0179.
