Professor Jānis Sīlis receives a certificate of appreciation from Ventspils City Council
On Thursday, September 17, a special event was held at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences (VUAS) in honor of the 70th birthday of Professor Jānis Sīlis. The Mayor of Ventspils City Council, Aivars Lembergs, also congratulated the Professor and presented him with a certificate of appreciation for his significant contribution to the university’s development and outstanding work in linguistics and translation.
Professor Jānis Sīlis was involved in the establishment of Ventspils University of Applied Sciences in 1997, contributing to the creation of VUAS’s development concept and the content for the future Faculty of Translation Studies. He also served as the dean of this faculty for 14 years. The Professor has also made a major contribution to the development of translation studies in Latvia and has published more than a hundred scientific articles and 3 monographs.
At the beginning of the event, Professor Jānis Sīlis gave a short lecture on translations of source texts, and in the second part of the event, the floor was also given to the greeters. Among the congratulatory representatives of the Ventspils City Council were the First Vice-Chairman for Infrastructure Affairs, Jānis Vītoliņš, the First Vice-Chairman for Cooperation Affairs, Guntis Blumbergs, and Ventspils City Council Deputy, Ilze Buņķe. Guests also came from Riga Stradiņš University (RSU) and Liepāja University.
After receiving the certificate of appreciation, Jānis Sīlis expressed his gratitude to the Ventspils City Council for its involvement in the establishment of Ventspils University of Applied Sciences and its support.
