Researchers Discuss Latvian Language of Science
The two-year project “Intralingual Aspects of Latvian Language of Science”, which marked successful cooperation among researchers from Ventspils University of Applied Sciences and Liepaja University has come to an end. As a result of the project, a digital database and a mobile application called “Language of Science” have been developed, which will be useful for students, pupils, and scientists. Additionally, a collective monograph titled “Language of Science: Style, Text, Context” is set to be published at the beginning of the next year.
On 27th November, the 25th International Scientific Conference “The Word: Aspects of Research” at the University of Liepaja hosted the final discussion of the project “Types of Scientific Texts” to evaluate what has been done and identify what needs to be done. Several important questions of scientific practice were brought up for discussion: should a teaching aid be considered a scientific work; where is the line between scientific and popular scientific texts; how should a collective monograph be defined or approached; how long the annotation should be; what type of text are theses; how important is laconic expression in science. These are just some of the important questions in studying the language of science, which also need to be answered in Latvian.
Summarising the project's achievements over the past two years, Agnese Dubova, researcher and project leader at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences, said: “We didn't solve all the issues raised in the project, but we did identify problems that still need to be investigated.” This just proves that language, including Latvian language of science, is a living organism that changes with the times and researchers need to be observant to see the changes to the language.
