Everyday Life of a Student from the Bachelor's Study Programme "Intercultural Communication"

Jun 14, 2022

At the beginning of this academic year, Amanda moved from Jelgava to Ventspils to start her studies in the Bachelor's degree programme "Intercultural Communication". Her everyday life is full of studying, active representation of students' interests, but there is also time for some fun.

Amanda says that her day is spent speaking English, as it is the working language of the programme. One exception is in French classes, where she has been learning to read, write and speak French for a year. She says that every day she has the opportunity to improve her English skills so that she could communicate fluently in a working environment in the future. After the lectures, she does her homework so that she would have time for herself in the evening.

As the newly elected Academic Director of the Student Council (SC), there are days when she has to join the SC meetings in the evenings, where plans for various events, news from the university and other current affairs are discussed. She says that the position and its responsibilities are new to her, but she has been able to settle into the role quite quickly and is already making plans for the coming year.

Amanda recently became a student representative in the VUAS Senate, where she has the opportunity to be present during important decisions and represent students' interests.

In the evenings she likes to play volleyball or go for walks by the sea, and she also enjoys evenings in the dormitory playing board games with friends.

Dear colleagues and friends, Last Thursday marked a dark moment in the history of Europe and the world as we became witness of a brutal and unprovoked act of war by Russia against a sovereign nation in the centre of Europe - Ukraine. We are deeply saddened by this. We at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences stand with the people of Ukraine at this difficult time and join the international community in condemning on the strongest possible terms the act of illegal aggression. We are prepared to offer every possible support within our means to staff, researchers and students at your institution. We are open look into the possibility to host your staff shorter or longer for periods of time. Once again - we stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and our thoughts are with all those directly or indirectly impacted by this invasion. Yours sincerely, Dr. Karlis Kreslins Rector of the Ventspils University of Applied Sciences Foto: Shutterstock
