On October 4, representatives of the Faculty of Translation Studies participated in a conference dedicated to terminology issues, "Characteristics of the Development of Latvian Language Terminology in the Context of Content and Technology," which took place at the National Library of Latvia in Riga (LNB).
The conference was opened by LNB Director Dagnija Baltiņa, and introductory remarks were given by Prof. Māris Baltiņš, Chair of the Terminology Commission of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. Arturs Krastiņš, Head of the Terminology and Legal Translation Department at the State Language Centre, provided information on the development and publication of terminology at the State Language Centre, followed by a presentation by Daina Pakalna on the usability, validity, and performance of the Latvian National Terminology Portal, as well as a report on the results of a user survey of the portal, presented by Aija Uzula. Elīna Peina gave a presentation on current issues in the development of Latvian terminology. The presentations were followed by an engaging discussion on the stability and variability of terminology in the digital age, with the participation of representatives from both industry and academia. At the end of the conference, participants had the opportunity to attend a thematic workshop entitled "Terminological Literacy: Theory and Practice."
The event was attended by a large group of FTS students, as well as FTS graduates who are already working in the translation industry. Terminology issues are always relevant and important for every translator, which is why such conferences are essential for every translator's practice. Ventspils University was represented at the conference by FTS Dean Jānis Veckrācis and lecturers Aiga Bādere and Silga Sviķe, who, in a workshop organized during the second part of the conference, talked about the courses and projects in terminology implemented at the Faculty of Translation Studies at VUAS and led a workshop entitled "New Resources for Translating Biology Texts: Opportunities and Advantages."
