On 4 October, representatives of the Faculty of Translation Studies (FTS) participated in the conference on terminology issues "Characteristics of Latvian terminology development in the context of content and technology", which took place in Riga, at the National Library of Latvia (LNL).
The conference was opened by Dagnija Baltiņa, Director of the National Library of Latvia, and the opening speeches were given by prof. Māris Baltiņš, Chairman of the Terminology Commission of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. The Head of the Department of Terminology and Legal Translation of the State Language Centre Arturs Krastiņš informed about the development and publication of terminology at the State Language Centre, followed by a report by Daina Pakalna on the usability, validity and performance of the Latvian National Terminology Portal, as well as a report on the results of a survey of the portal's users, presented by Aija Uzula. Elīna Peina reported on current issues in the development of Latvian terminography.
After the presentations, an interesting discussion on the sustainability and changeability of terminology in the digital age took place, with the participation of both industry and academia, and at the end of the conference there was an opportunity to attend the thematic workshop "Terminological Literacy: Theory and Practice".
The event was attended by a many FTS students, as well as FTS alumni already working in the translation market. Terminology issues are always topical and important for every translator, so conferences like this are essential for every translator's practice. Ventspils University of Applied Sciences was represented by the Dean of FTS Jānis Veckrācis, lecturers Aiga Bādere and Silga Sviķe. During the workshop at the second part of the conference Silga Sviķe talked about the courses and projects in terminology realized at the FTS and led the workshop "New resources for translating biology texts: opportunities and advantages".
