Jānis Veckrācis participates in the international conference “Language and Power”
On October 20th, Jānis Veckrācis, an Associate Professor and senior researcher at the Faculty of Translation Studies at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences, took part in the international scientific conference “Language and Power” organized by the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia in Riga. The event brought together researchers from Latvia, Ukraine, Estonia, and Lithuania.
Jānis Veckrācis was the closing speaker at the conference with the paper “Brezhnev's Time in (Post)Soviet and Western Reflection: the Domestic Context of Language Policy and its Representation in Periodicals”. This time, 13 researchers participated in the international conference – one from Estonia, one from Lithuania, one from Ukraine, and 10 from Latvia. The theme of the conference continues the research, initiated by the project of the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia to commemorate Valerija Bērziņa-Baltiņa on the existence of languages
under totalitarianism – this time up to the 1980s.
On November 19th, 2022, the collection of articles “Language and Power” was opened at the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia. The idea to publish the collection came from the Commemorative Foundation named after Valerija Bērziņa-Baltiņa for a Latvian language research project: starting with international conferences about Latvian language, linguistics, and cultural policy from 1940.
