Meeting of the National Encyclopaedia Council and Editorial Boards
At the end of the year, on December 11, a meeting of the National Encyclopedia Council and Editorial Boards was held at the Latvian National Library of Latvia. On behalf of the rector of VUAS, Andris Vaivads, the university was represented by Associate Professor and researcher Silga Sviķe from the FoTS.
The meeting was opened by speeches from the Minister of Culture of Latvia, Agnese Logina, and the Director of the National Library of Latvia, Dagnija Baltiņa. After the opening remarks, the editor of the National Encyclopedia, Valters Ščerbinskis, provided an update on the work accomplished over the last six months in the process of creating the National Encyclopedia, covering various statistical indicators, issues to be addressed, and future plans. Notably, the number of users of the encyclopedia has increased, with more and more users accessing it directly from educational institutions. Next year, the encyclopedia will see not only various content improvements but also visual changes, as well as modifications to the indexing process to enhance the accessibility of information across different search tools.
So far, several leading researchers from VUAS have contributed to the creation of entries for the National Encyclopedia. For instance, FoTS researchers have written entries on translation studies in Latvia, loanwords, and lexicography. During the meeting, Silga Sviķe had the opportunity to discuss the involvement of the university’s researchers in writing entries with one of the National Encyclopedia’s editors, Santa Briede, who confirmed that such collaboration will continue next year.
