The Faculty of Translation Studies of Ventspils University of Applied Sciences celebrates the European Day of Languages and the International Translation Day

Oct 08, 2021

On October 6, the Faculty of Translation Studies (TSF) of Ventspils University of Applied Sciences celebrated two late September events – the European Day of Languages (26/09) and the International Translation Day (30/09).

How to become a saint? That was the question Assoc. Prof. Astra Skrābane asked the wide audience of students gathered, after reviewing the remarkable life of Saint Jerome (347-420). Yes, Saint Jerome is the patron not only for translators, but for students, doctors, pilgrims, archaeologists, librarians and booksellers as well. The answer was – to translate a lot and to learn languages.

Guests of this event were translators who live and work at Ventspils International Writers and Translators' House in October: Laura Liubinavičiute and Ieva Venskevičiute from Lithuania, and Agnese Kasparova and Maija Indraša from Latvia.

There was a wide range of languages represented: Latvian, Lithuanian and English, of course, but also Spanish, French, Basque, Turkish, Chinese, Latin, Persian. During the event students were actively engaged in discussions and were glad to share their opinions about what they heard, which encouraged feedback between students and the experienced translators.

The information gained from the students' brief interviews about translation as a process and translation as the result of this process will be useful both in their studies and in life.

Dear colleagues and friends, Last Thursday marked a dark moment in the history of Europe and the world as we became witness of a brutal and unprovoked act of war by Russia against a sovereign nation in the centre of Europe - Ukraine. We are deeply saddened by this. We at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences stand with the people of Ukraine at this difficult time and join the international community in condemning on the strongest possible terms the act of illegal aggression. We are prepared to offer every possible support within our means to staff, researchers and students at your institution. We are open look into the possibility to host your staff shorter or longer for periods of time. Once again - we stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and our thoughts are with all those directly or indirectly impacted by this invasion. Yours sincerely, Dr. Karlis Kreslins Rector of the Ventspils University of Applied Sciences Foto: Shutterstock
