On 11 October, a hybrid lecture "Astronomy School" is planned at Liepāja Rainis Secondary School in room 124 or remotely in MS Teams
Topic: The European Space Agency's JUICE (Jupiter's Icy Moons Exploration Mission): First Year in Space"
Lecturer: Vladislav Bezrukov, Researcher, Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Centre (VIRAC)"
Lecture information:
*ESA JUICE - PRIDE experiment.
*JUICE (JUpiter ICy moons Explorer) is ESA's large-class science mission, launched in April 2023 and expected to reach the Jupiter system in 2030. JUICE's main goal is to explore the habitable zone around Jupiter, including its icy moons. Ganymede is a priority object that offers unique opportunities to analyse the nature and evolution of the icy world, including the properties of subglacial oceans. The study of Europa's moon will focus on recently active areas, while Callisto will be studied as a witness to the early solar system. The mission includes scientific studies using 11 instruments on the spacecraft as well as the ground-based radio astronomy experiment PRIDE.
VIRAC participates in the radio astronomy component of the JUICE mission, the Planetary Radio Interferometry and Doppler Experiment (PRIDE). The principle of PRIDE is the observation of spacecraft radio signals using a network of Earth-based radio telescopes with VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) technology. The main PRIDE measurements are the spacecraft coordinates and radial velocity. These data help to improve the ephemeris of the Jupiter system and support the interdisciplinary scientific research of the JUICE Mission.
